Un pezzo di Roma a Madrid. La beatificazione del quarto duca di Gandia Francisco de Borja (1624)

Abstract

El traslado de los restos de San Francisco de Borja a Madrid en 1617 supuso un importante acontecimiento en la Corte. Sus descendientes, el duque de Lerma, nieto de Francisco de Borja, en pleno declive de su poder, y el Cardenal Gaspar de Borja, bisnieto y hermano del VII duque de Gandía, fueron los principales promotores de la consecución de este objetivo. Unos años después, en 1624, el tercer Prepósito General de la Compañía de Jesús fue beatificado. La celebración de tan significada ocasión vino a poner de manifiesto la evolución tanto de la propia familia Borja en el nuevo contexto cortesano como de las relaciones entre la Monarquía Católica y el papado al comienzo del reinado de Felipe IV.

The transfer of the remains of San Francisco de Borja to Madrid in 1617 was an important event in the Court. His descendants, the Duke of Lerma, grandson of Francisco de Borja, in the full decline of his power, and Cardinal Gaspar de Borja, great-grandson and brother of the VII Duke of Gandía, were the main promoters of the achievement of this objective. A few years later, in 1624, the third General Superior of the Society of Jesus was beatified. The celebration of such a significant occasion came to show the evolution of both the Borja family in the new court context and the relationship between the Catholic Monarchy and the papacy at the beginning of the reign of Philip IV.
