Foreign relations between Spain and Latin America are based on a special linkage built on the existence of a common identity which connects historically both territories. As a result, it is difficult to understand Latin America without Spain and Spain without Latin America. Spain, relying on this common identity, has turned its foreign policy towards this region into an instrumentalized adjustable and discontinuous policy. Since the fall of the Spanish colonial Empire, until the entry of Spain into the European Community, and during other events such as the civil War, Francisco Franco’s dictatorship, and the Spanish democratic transition, foreign policy actions towards the region have been readapted and re oriented according to the Spanish internal situation in diverse periods of Spanish history. Relations between both regions are determined by the common historical and identity heritage that encompasses relations between Spain and Latin America. In addition to this, since the admission of Spain in the EU in 1986, relations between the European Union and Latin America have been considerably strengthened. However, although there is a widespread belief of Spain being a connecting bridge between the EU and Latin America, the truth is that it is really complicated to measure the extent to which this statement is true. There is no doubt that, because of its culture, its history, and its tradition, Spain's interest in Latin America is undeniable. However, it is not that Latin America is a priority for Spain, Latin America has become a natural part of its foreign policy, a support and a natural extension of Spain. In short, Latin America has become a sustain for Spain throughout history.en-GB
