In august 1943, despite holding full Spanish nationality, over six hundred
members of the Sephardic community in Salonika were deported
to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp by the occupying German
authorities, with the Spanish Diplomatic Representatives making no
apparent moves to intervene. Within the broader contest of an analysis
of Franco s Foreign Policy during World War II, this article deals with
the decision-making process leading to the deportation of the Sephardic
Jews from Salonika and their subsequent repatriation to Spanish territory,
amid growing Allied pressure on Spain, at the conclusion of the
war.
