Abstract

Tres años después de ser defendida en la Universidad Pontificia Comillas la magnífica tesis doctoral Lectura gráfica de la Escritura Sagrada en la España del siglo XIX, dirigida por José Manuel Sánchez Caro y tutelada por Elisa Estévez López, llega la publicación de la misma en la prestigiosa colección que la Asociación Bíblica Española mantiene en colaboración con la editorial Verbo Divino. El libro nos ofrece la totalidad de la tesis, habiendo sido eliminadas sólo algunas páginas más bien introductorias sobre la historia de la Biblia en España, y habiendo también reorganizado parte del material, de modo que sea ahora más fácil de leer y comprender su estructura. Se han corregido erratas menores y se ha mejorado la redacción en algunos momentos. Uno de los muchos méritos de esta obra es el explorar un ámbito poco estudiado del mundo bíblico, la imagen bíblica, para el que se requieren capacidades no sólo exegéticas: son también necesarias competencias propias del historiador del arte, además de conocimientos suficientes de la historia del libro impreso, pues estamos tratando ante todo con ediciones del siglo XIX. Estamos pues ante una obra espléndida, novedosa y útil, que nos hará redescubrir un modo de acercarnos a la Escritura, la ilustración del siglo XIX, que ha dejado huella en la memoria colectiva de muchos de nosotros, y nos brinda herramientas para interpretar tanto aquellos grabados de hace más de un siglo, como cualquier otro acercamiento a la Escritura, también actual, donde la imagen sea la herramienta principal del intérprete.

Three years after being defended at the Pontifical University Comillas the magnificent doctoral thesis Graphic reading of the Scripture Sacred in 19th century Spain, directed by José Manuel Sánchez Caro and tutelada by Elisa Estévez López, comes the publication of it in the prestigious collection that the Biblical Association Española maintains in collaboration with Verbo Divino publishing house. The book offers us the totality of the thesis, having been eliminated just some rather introductory pages about history of the Bible in Spain, and having also reorganized part of the material, so that it is now easier to read and understand your structure. Minor errata have been corrected and the writing in some moments. One of the many merits of this work is to explore an area little studied of the biblical world, the biblical image, for which they require not only exegetical capacities: they are also necessary skills of the art historian, as well as knowledge enough of the history of the printed book, because we are trying first of all with editions of the nineteenth century. We are therefore facing a splendid, novel and useful work, which It will rediscover a way of approaching the Scripture, the illustration of the nineteenth century, which has left its mark in the collective memory of many of us, and gives us tools to interpret both those engravings from more than a century ago, as well as another approach to Scripture, also current, where the image be the main tool of the interpreter.
