Since its foundation in 1965, the Mujahideen-e Khalq (MEK) have engaged in a fight against the rulers of the country. After contributing to the fall of the Shah, Jomeini and its followers marginalized the group when constructing the newly established Islamic Republic of Iran. While in exile, the MEK, led by Massoud and Maryam Rajavi, launched an “ideological revolution” that has meant the consideration of the group as a cult. Listed as a terrorist organization from 1997 until 2012, the MEK have established strong ties with pro-regime change conservative sectors in the West. The role of the mujahideen in a hypothetical collapse of a theocratic regime that celebrates its 40th anniversary could be vital.en-GB
