Abstract
The high prevalence of suicide attempt and suicide ideation in gender-based violence victims is well documented, however, there is Little information about factors that modulate this relationship. This paper is a literature review about the different risk and protective factors in the relationship between gender-based violence and suicide attempt and ideation. Th estudies that are included in this review have demonstrated the significant relationship between suffering gender-based violence and attempting and thinking about suicide. Several risk factors have been found, such as mental disorders, psychological distress, history of child abuse, severity and type of violence, whereas resilience, self-control and social support appear as protective factors in various researches. With this findings, we highly recommend that emergency services and specific attention services for gender-based violence victims should take into account the high prevalence of suicide among gender-based violence victims and the factors that modify that relationship when treating women that come to see them.
