Bone cements, or polymethylmethacrylate cements, are one of the most important biomaterials in the field of orthopedics as they have a widespread use in fixing prostheses to bone tissue. However, in many cases these joints do not exhibit satisfactory resistance when their use is prolonged over time, having to be replaced, with the consequences that this entails.
In this way, this study, is intended to check whether adding different amounts of a reinforcing nanomaterial such as graphene is able to improve the mechanical properties of fatigue and fracture, common forms of failure in this type of prosthetic joints.
As the improvement of the strength in this type of composite materials depends on a large extent on the dispersion of the nanomaterial within the polymer matrix, the effect it has by adding small amounts of 0.1%, 0.05% and 0.025 % by weight of graphene is studied. On the other hand, as the dispersion may also depend on the type of graphene used, the effect that chemical modification of the graphene can have will be studied, in case it has a better interaction with the polymer.
Thus, the results of the tests will be analyzed to optimize the amount of reinforcement agent and the type of graphene used to achieve the best results of resistance to fracture and fatigue.
