Posttraumatic growth (PTG) is a term referring to positive changes that people experience as consequence of negative experiences with a strong impact. The objective of this study was to investigate the functioning of the PTG in a sample of 203 parents and mothers of transsexual boys and girls, comparing it with a control group of 249 parents and mothers with non-clinical children. The design was transversal and correlational. The hypotheses were that PTG levels in the studied population would be significantly different from the general population, and that other variables such as emotional intelligence, rumination, and perceived social support would play a relevant role in it. In the experimental group, moreover, information was collected regarding its link with the associative movement as well as the stage in the process of adaptation to the reality in which they found themselves. The results indicates that the degree of PTG does not differ significantly in both groups globally, although there are significant differences in concrete dimensions of the construct. On the other hand, the variables that were predictors of PTG were all different for both groups. We discussed why the results have differed to those expected, as well as the relevance of the variables that have been most significant. The finding of the value of the participation of these parents in peer groups as a determining factor in the acquisition of PTG is highlighted
