Sostenibilidad: un problema de condiciones de contorno

Abstract

A los ingenieros industriales nos han enseñado a controlar la realidad, sus procesos y sistemas, desde el principio divide y vencerás . El éxito o fracaso del control de un sistema depende, por tanto, de nuestra capacidad de delimitarlo adecuadamente, de conocer a la perfección sus procesos (saber describirlos, predecir resultados ante diferentes estímulos, etc.) y determinar debidamente las condiciones de contorno. Las condiciones de contorno son aquellas variables que, no siendo controladas por nuestro sistema, le afectan directamente. Al mismo tiempo, nuestro sistema aunque no sea el único responsable de modificar las condiciones de contorno (entiéndase también, entorno) tiene cierta influencia sobre él.

Industrial engineers like me have been taught to control reality, its processes and systems, from the beginning "divide and you'll win". The success or failure of the control of a system depends, therefore, on our capacity to delimit it adequately, to know perfectly its processes (know how to describe them, predict results before different stimuli, etc.) and to determine the contour conditions properly. The boundary conditions are those variables that, not being controlled by our system, directly affect it. At the same time, our system - although it is not solely responsible for modifying the boundary conditions (also understand, environment) - has some influence on it.
