Chinese Exceptionalism and its effect on Chinese foreign policy Analysis of Chinese leaders’ discourse and the Belt and Road Initiative
Abstract
Este trabajo estudiará el Excepcionalismo Chino, una doctrina política que enfatiza ciertos valores que hacen a China única, como su historia, su cultura o su gobierno. El objetivo será estudiar la influencia de esta idea en el discurso de política exterior de los líderes chinos, específicamente en Xi Jinping. Asimismo, este trabajo analizará la conocida como Nueva Ruta de la Seda, una iniciativa liderada por China para la promoción del comercio en Asia, Europa y África.
En primer lugar, se podría afirmar que el discurso actual de Xi Jinping contiene elementos del Excepcionalismo Chino. De la misma manera, la Nueva Ruta de la Seda ha tomado una posición muy relevante en el ámbito de política exterior china. Por último, la política exterior china representada por Xi Jinping se ve influenciada por el Excepcionalismo Chino que desde el plano teórico aporta elementos contrarios a la hegemonía. Sin embargo, las estrategias seguidas de acuerdo el Sueño Chino aportan al liderazgo chino el potencial de convertirse en una fuerza hegemónica. This thesis is going to study the idea of Chinese Exceptionalism, a political doctrine that emphasizes some values that make China unique, such as its history, its culture, its government. The purpose of this thesis will be to study the influence of Chinese Exceptionalism in the foreign policy discourse of Chinese leadership, more specifically, the figure of Xi Jinping. In addition, this work will analyze the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), a China-led infrastructure project to develop trade in Asia, Europe and Africa.
First of all, Xi Jinping’s current discourse contains many elements of Chinese Exceptionalism. Moreover, the BRI has become a key policy within the realm of Chinese foreign policy, allowing China to earn more power and influence both regionally and globally. Lastly, Chinese Foreign Policy is influenced to some extent by Chinese Exceptionalism which theoretically provides a discourse of peace and cooperation. However, the strategies followed under the Chinese Dream confer the Chinese leadership with the potential to become a hegemonic power.
