This research paper analyses the legal and socio-political factors that characterise Sino-Hongkonese relations with the aim of analysing the future of the One Country, Two Systems regime. The demonstrations that took place in 2019 constitute a clear sign of the tension experienced in the region in view of the uncertain future of the Hong Kong regime, which seems to be limited by Article 5 of its Basic Law until 30 June 2047. In view of this uncertainty, this research assesses three possible future scenarios: Hong Kong becomes part of Mainland China, a democratic transition takes place in the region or the One Country, Two Systems regime endures over time. In order to choose the most probable scenario, firstly, the historical context of Hong Kong illustrating its constitution as an autonomous region is presented. Theories of hybrid regimes, democratization processes, the phenomena of Chinese nationalism and Hong Kong localism and the processes of socialization and creation of spheres of influence are also exposed. Finally, this research exposes an analysis of the legal status of the One Country, Two Systems regime and the factors that influence the claims and limitations of Hong Kong and China. Taking into account all these factors, it ultimately advocates for the continuity of the One Country, Two Systems regime.en-GB
