La reestructuración del sistema financiero español tras la crisis de 2008
Abstract
The aim of this paper is to study how the recent 2008 crisis affected the financial institutions in Spain, and how
they have managed to turn around the situation and become a solvable and robust industry today. It includes the
analysis and contextualisation of how the financial crisis began and its general consequences in Europe and
more precisely in the Spanish economy and in its financial institutions, as well as the main solutions adopted
by the banks. We will also see the measures applied and the institutions created by the Spanish Government to
implement mergers between financial institutions as well as to absorb the enormous amounts of debt (nonperforming
loans) and real estate assets that prevented banks from doing their core-business.
In order to do this, the approach will be made from a theorical point of view concerning publications from
recognised authors and their conclusions and reflections about the topic. What we want to achieve is an in-depth
study of the causes that led to this situation and the measures taken to address the problem. Furthermore, we
will study a real case study of a Spanish financial institution that experienced a merger, a restructuring process
and an acquisition to enable it being profitable today.
