The first wave of coronavirus can be placed between January and the summer period of 2020. During this period, governments around the world react with economic, social, health and other policies to curb, contain and alleviate the effect of COVID-19. For the first time in history, we can observe that some of the best-led countries are being headed by women. Therefore, this project will study the relevance of the gender factor in the difference in leadership during the pandemic. More specifically, this essay will focus on the rulers of the two key powers of Europe: Ángela Merkel and Boris Johnson, the leaders of Germany and the United Kingdom respectively. The temporal context comprises the first wave of the pandemic. The conclusion that will be explained throughout this research is that gender has played a significant role in the difference in leadership between the two leaders, but it is not the only variable since there are distinctive personality and political traits between the two that have also played an essential role. The biggest difference is the superior empathy, prioritization of health policies and listening to medical experts of the German Chancellor, compared to the more aggressive and focused economic revival stance of the UK leader.en-GB
