POPULISMO Y PÉRDIDA DE CALIDAD DEMOCRÁTICA.

Abstract

Los movimientos populistas han resurgido con tal fuerza durante estos últimos años que han llamado la atención de numerosos académicos y estudiosos de la ciencia política. El objetivo de este trabajo es comprender el fenómeno populista y analizar cuáles son sus posibles consecuencias para la democracia. ¿Se trata de un proceso democrático o constituye una verdadera amenaza para nuestros sistemas políticos?. Estudiaremos, en primer lugar, el populismo y la democracia por separado para luego establecer la relación que existe entre ambos y responder a esta pregunta. Por último, analizaremos el caso de Trump en Estados Unidos, como ejemplo paradigmático de un movimiento populista que logra llegar al poder a través de las urnas.

Recently, populist movements have arisen with such strength that they have caught the attention of numerous academics and researchers of political sciences. The objective of this work is to comprehend the populist phenomenon and to analyze its posible consequences for democracy. Is it a democratic process or does it pose a real threat for our political systems? First, we will study populism and democracy separately so that we can later establish the relationship between both phenomena and answer this question. Lastly we will study Trump’s case in the United States, as the paradigmatic example of a populist movement that reaches power through the polls.
