Schizophrenia is one of the psychotic disorders and stands out for the presence of negative symptoms (such as affective flattening or apathy) and cognitive, in addition to the characteristic positive symptoms (like delusions or hallucinations) of psychosis. A main aspect of this disorder is the moment of its appearance that frequently happens around adolescence. Formerly called premature dementia, schizophrenia conception and description has undergone many changes. Currently, the DSM-V considers schizophrenia in the most comprehensive way to date, although further research is required to improve its description. Schizophrenia symptoms expression is not always the same because it depends on the person. So, there are differences about the characteristics and course of schizophrenia based on various aspects such as gender or culture. Recent research has focused primarily on trying to gain more insight into the negative symptoms. However, other aspects are also investigated like paranoia and the influence of attachment, the theory of mind or the transdiagnostic approach. This review aims to explore the concept of schizophrenia, its symptoms and the state of the latest research about this disorder.
