Abstract
This project presents a possible design for a direct-drive radial flux permanent magnet synchronous generator for an offshore wind turbine. It is intended to be able to extract a nominal power of 5MW and to be able to generate an additional 10 %, resulting in a 5.5 MW generator.
The stator windings will be connected in a delta connection despite not being able to eliminate third order harmonics, as it is a priority to reduce as much copper as possible as the winding is a double layer winding.
A first design will be obtained which will be optimized to improve aspects such as the power extracted from the wind, which in turn is accompanied by an increase in the power factor and efficiency. The length of the slots will be reduced in order to reduce the synchronous inductance, a parameter that conditions the behaviour of the generator.
The final budget for the generator is 725,473.59 €, which represents 16% of the total cost of a complete wind turbine (nacelle, blades, tower, foundations, etc.), if the most recent value is taken to estimate the cost of around 800,000 € per MW. Thus, the designed wind turbine would cost around €4.52 million.
