Abstract
Active angeing is an increasingly common phenomenon in the stage of old age that
considers variables that optimize the aging process. The current aimed to provide a more complete
view of the variables that influence active ageing and that need further research: quality of life,
depression, resilience and self-perception of aging, depending on the place of residence of the
elderly.
Material and methods: 30 institutionalized elderly people and 31 elderly people living in the
community participated voluntarily (mean age 82.4 years, 77.0% women and 23.0% men). The
quality of life was evaluated through the WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire, depression through the
Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS), resilience through the Resilience Scale (ER) and the selfperception
of aging through the development of a five-item battery of the Philadelphia Moral
Scale. Results: The levels of quality of life, depression, resilience and self-perception of aging that have
been found to similar in elderly people who are institutionalised and those living in their own
home.
Conclusions: The institutionalisation of the elderly does not have to be related to negative
characteristics and, therefore, to a decrease in the quality of life. It is necessary to carry out more
research that takes into account the different variables that influence active ageing and that
compare these variables in institutionalized elderly people and elderly people living in their own
homes.
