Abstract
The objective of this study of schizophrenia is finding protective factors that can be used to prevent a high operating severity after a certain length of time. The study population consisted of 30 male subjects averaging 50 years of age, diagnosed with schizophrenia and living in a long-term psychiatric care unit. An ex post facto retrospective design was used, taking the following variables into account: cannabis use before diagnosis, coping style, cognitive and psychosocial functions, and operating severity. Statistically significant results were found on the variables “operating severity” and “psychosocial functions”, where the effect size was p = 0.56 and the statistical power was 1 – β = .88. With this in mind, it could be said that there’s a statistically significant association between good psychosocial functions and a lower operating severity that could be extrapolated to the rest of the population. The rest of the analysed variables didn’t have any statistical support, probably affected by the limitations of the study such as social desirability, closed treatment regime, homogeneous sample and the difficulty that some of the subjects had when it came to understand some of the instruments.
