Abstract
The interaction between mind and body creates great ambiguity among health professionals.
The aim of this study was to explore the relationships between somatic symptoms, defense
mechanisms and alexithymia. The differences between individuals with higher predisposition
to somatization and those with psychosomatic conditions were observed. A total of 190
participants, all of whom were adults and from non-clinical population, completed the TAS-
20, DSQ-40 and the Somatization factor of SCL-90. Sample was made up of 190 subjects,
adults and non-clinical population. Non-parametric tests were performed: Spearman and
Mann-Whitney and Kruskall Wallis correlations for independent samples. The results indicate
a higher alexithymia and the use of maladaptive defense mechanisms in people with greater
tendency to somatize their interna! states. No significant correlations were found in alex.ithymia
scores and defense mechanisms in individuals suffering from a medica!, physical, or
psychological diagnosis. This study highlights the need to pay special attention to the symbolic
world and interna! conflicts in the approacih to somatic diseases.
