Abstract
precisa One of the most studied communication patterns within a couple is the demand-withdraw
one. This ciclic communication and conflict management dynamic takes place when one of
the members starts an arguments using emotional demands while the other responds
withdrawing and avoiding the conflict. One of the main features of this pattern is the
tendency of women to demand and men to withdraw so there are different theories to explain
this gender divergency. The aim of this study was to demonstrate how this gender differences
were product of gender social construction and not due to inherent differences between men
and women hence studying this pattern in different sexual orientation couples. A sample of
50 heterosexual and homosexual couples were selected and were asked to completed two
questionnaires: the Bem Sex Role lnventory and The Communication Patterns Questionnaire
(CPQ). The obtained results rejected partially the hypothesis as there was no relation found between demand behaviour and the gender role or to sex but it was found between these two
variables and withdrawal behaviour. The need to study the demand-withdraw pattem as a
multicausal phenomenon is discussed as well as the complexity of the concept of gender to
preciselly make it operational.
