Abstract
An adopted person finds himself questioning his identity throughout his different evolutionary stages. To build his identity in an integrated way and accept his status as an adopted person, the person must explore his multiple roots while interacting with his multiple contexts. During their life, they will face various tasks and depending on how they solve them, it will affect, in one way or another, the development of their identity. Positive discrimination, racism, the lack of representation of their ethnicity and race in the dominant culture and a lack of a sense of belonging, are possible elements that can challenge the adopted person and pose an obstacle to the development of their identity. Within this exploration, the role of the adoptive parents is fundamental for the adopted child to build an integrated identity and have a sense of continuity in their story. Parents must communicate the origins of their child in all the evolutionary stages and provide sensible caregiving. Through systemic or ecological interventions, we can seek to promote social support and boost a sense of belonging and facilitate the construction of a healthy and integrated identity in adoptive people. Consequently, it may reduce the high rates of adopted people in mental health care centres and their psychological needs.
