En el mes de diciembre de 2014 se inician las obras de un macro-proyecto que costará 40.000 millones de dólares y que unirá el océano Pacífico y el Atlántico, conectando el Lago Nicaragua con el mar. El gobierno nicaragüense y la empresa china HKND Group firmaron el 14 de junio de 2013 un acuerdo marco para la construcción del proyecto Gran Canal Interoceánico, que contempla su concesión y explotación por 50 años, prorrogables por otros 50 años más. La ruta propuesta y aprobada es tres veces más larga que la del actual Canal de Panamá, unos 278 metros.
