Cuidadores y cuidados

Abstract

Ballesol y la Cátedra de Bioética de la Universidad Pontificia Comillas iniciaron, en 2019, una andadura común para reflexionar juntos sobre el cuidado de las personas mayores tanto en centros residenciales como en el ámbito familiar.

Durante los años 2020 y 2021, el COVID, ha puesto a prueba a la humanidad en todos los sentidos: médico, político, económico, social, y asistencial. Especialmente puso a prueba el cuidado de los mayores. Así se demostró que es necesario reflexionar sobre la ética de los cuidados de los mayores y de los cuidadores.

Esta publicación recoge siete de las intervenciones de las jornadas que se celebraron en abril del 2021. Su lectura recuerda que el cuidado es una relación entre el cuidador y la persona que requiere ayuda, y como toda relación humana debe regirse por los principios de la ética. Estos se convierten en el mejor indicador de calidad. Los contenidos se articulan en torno a dos polos.

Cuidadores: la familia y los profesionales de los cuidados deben actuar conforme a criterios éticos que humanicen a las personas que cuidan. Pero también, ellos necesitan ser cuidados, especialmente tras la experiencia traumática del COVID.

Cuidados: Sus aspectos éticos y su excelencia son objeto de estudio. Pero, sobre todo, ¿cómo queremos ser cuidados? Los aspectos sociales y la autonomía.

Ballesol and the Chair of Bioethics of the Universidad Pontificia Comillas began, in 2019, a common journey to reflect together on the care of the elderly both in residential centers and in the family environment.

During the years 2020 and 2021, COVID has put humanity to the test in all senses: medical, political, economic, social, and welfare. It especially put the care of the elderly to the test. Thus, it was demonstrated that it is necessary to reflect on the ethics of care for the elderly and caregivers.

This publication collects seven of the interventions of the conferences that were held in April 2021. Its reading reminds that care is a relationship between the caregiver and the person who requires help, and like all human relationships it must be governed by the principles of ethics . These become the best quality indicator. The contents are articulated around two poles.

Caregivers: the family and care professionals must act according to ethical criteria that humanize the people they care for. But also, they need to be cared for, especially after the traumatic experience of COVID.

Care: Its ethical aspects and its excellence are the object of study. But above all, how do we want to be cared for? The social aspects and autonomy.
