Abstract
The objective of this project is the design, study and calculation of the elements
constituting a low voltage supply facility for a law firm headquarters building.
The structure will be built and located at the new urban expansion of the Northern
Castellana District in Madrid. With a 3.917,44 m2 total area, it will be made up of a
ground floor, three floors in height, cover and two basements.
Three general electric switchboards and twenty two secondary boards (distributed
according to each plant facilities needs) will be installed. The General Grid Board will
be supplied from the transformation center and, under normal operating conditions, it
will satisfy the whole of the building loads. The General Group Board, in case of failure
in the network, will be powered by the electric generator installed on the roof of the
building, ensuring continuous supply to the most sensitive loads and emergency lighting
elements. Finally, UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) computer equipment will be
connected, guaranteeing continuous, quality power.
Building loads will be classified in two categories, which are lighting and power
circuits, and as a result of those calculations the power balance will be determined in
order to estimate the total load demanded. From that, one concludes that the transformer
must be sized for an apparent power of 630 kVA, and for 125 kVA in the case of the
electric generator. Also, this calculation has allowed us to determine the wire section
required for each individual circuit, being this process made by admissible current and
voltage drop.
The project includes the design and calculation of the transformer center, located in the
first basement floor, which supplies the building. It will be a subscriber’s power
transforming center, which is property of the client, with the input grid supply owned by
the company. Ventilation system is natural, as the necessary input and output air
surfaces show that it is the most efficient system given this case. Measurement devices
and protection equipment will be housed in modular, medium voltage switchgears.
One of the main aspects regarding this project is the design and calculation of the
different lighting elements facilities, for which DIALux calculation software has been
used.
A modern and efficient design is proposed, always complying with the values
established by the Technical Building Code. Most of these lights used are based on LED
technology, due to the energy savings involved (sustainability is also a secondary
objective to be reached). Basements, as they are considered wet areas, are lighted by
watertight luminaries, like inside the transformer. The building will be equipped with
natural light and presence sensors so further energy can be saved. It has also been
performed the calculation and design of lighting in the outdoor garden area, which
includes the lighting of an ornamental water fountain.
For ground calculations two different configurations have been considered, one for the
low voltage and another one for the transformer. Both systems electrodes ere designed
in a way that safety of people and the integrity of the devices when abnormal situations
occur is ensured.
Other remarkable elements considered in the project have been circuit protection
devices, lightning protection equipment, reactive power compensation systems, electric car charging facilities and solar panel installation on the roof; always complying with
proper rules and regulations.
