Abstract
Objectives
The objective of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) in reducing depressive symptoms in people over 60 years of age.
Methodology
Relevant electronic databases were searched from 2010 to 2022, including PubMed, Cochrane Library, PsycINFO, and Psicodoc. One reviewer independently screened eligible studies.
Results
We included 8 studies with 1013 participants in the review. Four studies were qualified as RCTs, two others as quasi-experimental studies and two others as case studies. ACT significantly reduced posttreatment depression compared to pretreatment outcomes in most studies. And they remained stable at follow-up, in the studies in which follow-ups were performed.
Limitations
The heterogeneity between the included studies lead to the heterogeneity of the results. The size of the sample turned out to be a limitation of the review, since it is not significant enough to extrapolate the results to the general population. The search results also had limitations, as only studies published in Spanish and English were searched.
Conclusions
The current study suggested that ACT is effective in treating depressive symptomatology in institutionalized and community older adults, even with comorbid conditions, such as chronic pain or anxiety, as well as with sessions in an individual or group format.
