Sharing values in the Eurovision Song Contest and the OTI Festival: The Moral Fourth Person un the Lyrics of the Winning Songs.

Abstract

Este artículo estudia el contenido de las canciones ganadoras del "Festival de la Canción de Eurovisión" (ESC), y luego lo compara con el contenido de las canciones ganadoras del "Festival de la Canción OTI." Cada canción gira en torno a las emociones y deseos de un personaje simbólico, interpretado como la "persona musical", que expresa una tensión entre dos conjuntos de valores opcionales opuestos, a saber: valores positivos (por ejemplo, alta autoestima, gratitud, cuidado, respeto, consideración, sabiduría, corazón, alma, amor, paz) versus valores negativos (por ejemplo, baja autoestima, ingratitud, descuido, falta de respeto, ignorancia, parcialidad, crueldad, falta de alma, odio, guerra). Esta oposición semántica que opera en las canciones se aborda típicamente a través de la construcción de un nuevo personaje ideal, la “cuarta persona moral”, comprometida con la defensa de la dignidad humana y la fraternidad. La transición entre la persona musical y la cuarta persona moral se produce con la introducción de tres valores éticos fundamentales, que no son opcionales, sino prescriptivos: bondad, solidaridad y reciprocidad. Las canciones ganadoras en ESC y OTI ofrecen un texto cultural que resulta de gran utilidad para diversos campos del saber académico, tanto estudios semánticos, como pragmáticos, discursivos, teorías literarias, etnología, teoría musical, sociología del espectáculo, cultura política, y psicología social.

This article studies the content of the winning songs in the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC), and then compares it with the content of the winning songs at the OTI Song Festival. Each song revolves around the emotions and desires of a symbolic personage, construed as the "musical person", that expresses a tension between two sets of opposing optional values, namely: positive values (e. g. high self-esteem, gratitude, care, respect, consideration, wisdom, heart, soul, love, peace) versus negative values (e. g. low self-esteem, ingratitude, carelessness, disrespect, ignorance, bias, heartlessness, soullessness, hate, war). This semantic opposition operating in the songs is typically addressed through the construction of a new ideal personage, the “moral fourth person”, committed to defend human dignity and fraternity. The transition between the musical person and the moral fourth person occurs with the introduction of three fundamental ethical values, which are not optional, but prescriptive: goodness, solidarity, and reciprocity. The winning songs in ESC and OTI offer a precious cultural text that turns out to be very useful for various fields of academic knowledge, both semantic studies, as well as pragmatic, discursive, and literary theories, ethnology, musical theory, sociology of the spectacle, political culture, and social psychology.
