European vs US stock market (article in The Corner)
Abstract
Approximately a quarter of the difference in returns between the European and American markets fron 2011 results from its different composition in terms of telecommunications and technology sectors (the European telecommunication operators have languished, perceived as mature and highly regulated public sector companies, whereas Apple, Amazon, Google and Microsoft have led the largest rise in the Nasdaq).
But the remaining three quarters of the difference in returns, and what has really marked the different evolution of both indexes, result from the banking sector.
When European interest rates normalise, European banks will recover a large part of the difference in returns lost in compared to the American banks.
