Brexit: lo que sí sabemos

Abstract

Las 600 páginas negociadas durante tres años, con números y plazos, están cerradas. Son otras 30, las de la "political declaration" (texto separado que es una declaración general de intenciones, no jurídicamente vinculante, redactada por políticos y no por funcionarios, y que trata de definir con qué planteamientos se afrontará la salida), las que generan tantas diferencias, incluso dentro de un mismo partido. Ahora mismo parece verosímil que lleguemos a finales de octubre sin haber alcanzado un acuerdo. Si hubiera que apostar por algo, diríamos que el Reino Unido terminará por salir de la Unión Europea, con un acuerdo difuso que, cundo se vaya concretando en el tiempo, veremos que termina por definir una relación no muy distinta de la que ahora mismo la UE tiene con Noruega. Creemos que la salida ordenada del Reino Unido sería una buena noticia para el futuro de la UE. Una Unión Europea en que todos los países relevantes compartan el euro como moneda común podrá avanzar en un proceso de integración, cesión de soberanía, que es imprescindible en un mundo global.

The 600 pages negotiated over three years, with numbers and deadlines, are closed. There are another 30, those of the "political declaration", which generate so many differences, even within the same party. Right now it seems plausible that we will arrive at the end of October without having reached an agreement. If we had to bet on something, we would say that the United Kingdom will end up leaving the European Union, with a diffuse agreement that, as it materializes over time, we will see that it ends up defining a relationship not very different from the one that the EU has with Norway right now. We believe that the orderly exit of the UK would be good news for the future of the EU. A European Union in which all the relevant countries share the euro as a common currency will be able to advance in a process of integration, the transfer of sovereignty, which is essential in a global world.
