One of the most striking features of the religious life of the late Middle Ages was the dramatic increase of women consecrated to God, the diversification of their forms of life and the great weight of the feminine in the symbolism and religious language. In this book we examine the complexity of the phenomenon on the basis of its characteristic link with the city as decisive factor. It shows the role played by religious women in the construction and evolution of late medieval urban social and political fabric in a dimension of freedom and authority that gave rise to new female forms of socialization and advocacy but also of control by the institutional and oligarchic power systems. The focus is on the Andalusian context for the richness of its female religious manifestations considering that this fact has to do with the action of women in shaping the new urban Christendoms born after the Reconquest. The amplitude of the time frame allows to perceive its evolution and changes in the transition to the Modern Age.en-GB
