La Labor Diplomática de Bernardo de Cólogan

Abstract

Ante una China sufriendo el infame “Siglo de la Humillación”, un periodo repleto de desafíos que marcaron una huella indeleble en la nación surge a finales del XIX la revuelta de los Bóxers. El rechazo y la desconfianza hacia el extranjero, el aislamiento, la inestabilidad imperial y el estancamiento tecnológico propiciaron una coyuntura histórica digna de estudio. El presente Trabajo de Fin de Grado (TFG) tiene como propósito destacar el papel del célebre diplomático español, Bernardo J. de Cólogan y Cólogan en el conflicto, en ocasiones relegado al olvido. Asimismo, se analizará la diplomacia de la época mediante el estudio de telegramas, informes y documentos por el entonces Comisionado de los Estados Unidos en China. Adquiriendo gran relevancia en el contexto actual, donde China se posiciona como figura prominente en la comunidad internacional. La comprensión de este periodo histórico arroja luz sobre la dinámica del poder y la historia y el desarrollo de la diplomacia.

As China suffered through the infamous "Century of Humiliation", a period full of challenges that left an indelible mark on the nation, the Boxer revolt emerged at the end of the 19th century. The rejection and mistrust of foreigners, isolation, imperial instability, and technological stagnation led to a historical juncture worthy of study. The purpose of this thesis is to highlight the role of the prominent Spanish diplomat, Bernardo J. de Cólogan y Cólogan, in the conflict, sometimes relegated to oblivion. Furthermore, the diplomacy of the time will be analyzed through the study of telegrams, reports, and documents by the late Commissioner of the United States in China. Acquiring great relevance in the current context, where China is positioned as a prominent figure in the international community. Understanding this historical period sheds light on the dynamics of power and the history and development of diplomacy.
