Discapacidad Intelectual en África Subsahariana. Estudios de caso de Nigeria y Kenia

Abstract

La discapacidad intelectual en sí misma representa una limitación en el funcionamiento intelectual y en las habilidades adaptativas de las personas, lo que puede influir significativamente en su calidad de vida y su capacidad para participar plenamente en la sociedad. En regiones que ya enfrentan múltiples limitaciones de por sí, que van desde la pobreza y la falta de acceso a la atención médica hasta limitaciones en su infraestructura educativa., el desafío es aún mayor. Este trabajo de investigación se enfoca en el África subsahariana con el objetivo de analizar y comparar la situación en la que se encuentran las personas con discapacidad intelectual en dos países representativos de la región: Nigeria y Kenia. A través de un enfoque de estudio de casos, se pretende examinar la disponibilidad de servicios de atención médica y educación, las políticas gubernamentales de cada país y las iniciativas de organizaciones no gubernamentales a este efecto en Nigeria y Kenia – teniendo en cuenta también factores culturales, socioeconómicos y políticos. Este TFG busca desarrollar en profundidad de la situación actual, así como destacar los desafíos y avances en la atención a la discapacidad intelectual en estos países del África Subsahariana. A lo largo del análisis comparativo que se ofrecerá en esta investigación se buscará distinguir qué estrategias son más efectivas a la hora de abordar las necesidades específicas de las personas con discapacidad intelectual de estos países.

Intellectual disability itself represents a limitation in the intellectual functioning and adaptive skills of individuals, which can significantly influence their quality of life and their ability to fully participate in society. In regions that already face multiple limitations, ranging from poverty and lack of access to healthcare to limitations in their educational infrastructure, the challenge is even greater. This research focuses on Sub-Saharan Africa with the aim of analyzing and comparing the situation of people with intellectual disabilities in two representative countries of the region: Nigeria and Kenya. Through a case study approach, the aim is to examine the availability of healthcare and education services, government policies of each country, and the initiatives of non-governmental organizations in this regard in Nigeria and Kenya – also taking into account cultural, socioeconomic, and political factors. This thesis seeks to develop an in-depth understanding of the current situation, as well as highlight the challenges and advances in addressing intellectual disabilities in these Sub-Saharan African countries. Throughout the comparative analysis offered in this research, the goal is to identify which strategies are most effective in addressing the specific needs of people with intellectual disabilities in these countries.
