Lyndon B. Johnson y la crisis de la OTAN de 1966 Análisis de la respuesta en base a su personalidad y carácter.

Abstract

Criticado por unos, elogiados por otros, la historiografía relativa a Lyndon B. Johnson tardó en dejar de estar ensombrecida por la Guerra de Vietnam. Este trabajo pretende enmarcarse en este ámbito “más allá de Vietnam” y estudia la respuesta del presidente norteamericano a la crisis de la OTAN de 1966 (cuando Francia se retiró del Comando Integrado de la misma). El objetivo es ver cómo la personalidad del presidente se ve reflejada en las acciones que tomó relativas a la crisis. Se pretende así ayudar a entender mejor el papel que jugó Lyndon Johnson en este episodio de la Guerra Fría. Para ello, se usan la valoración del carácter de LBJ por parte de Barber y la de su personalidad política por parte de Kearns, entre otros. Dichas características se contrastan con las acciones de Johnson descritas en los documentos relativos a la crisis del Foreign Relations of the United States. Se concluye que mucho de la personalidad de Johnson puede observarse en la respuesta a la crisis. Por ende, se confirman así los postulados de Barber de que la personalidad del presidente forja su comportamiento presidencial y se ánima a que, en este clima de incertidumbre de la OTAN, los académicos rescaten a Barber para predecir el comportamiento de los líderes.

Criticized by some, praised by others, it took some time for the historiography involving Lyndon B. Johnson to leave the shadow of the Vietnam War behind. This work aims at being framed in said “beyond Vietnam” realm and studies the north American president’s response to the NATO crisis of 1966 (when France left its Integrated Command). The objective is to see how the president’s personality is reflected in the actions he took in relation to the crisis. By doing so, this thesis strives to help understand better the role played by Lyndon B. Johnson in this episode of the Cold War. To this end, the assessment of LBJ’s character by Barber and of its political personality by Kearns are used, among other. Said characteristics are contrasted with Johnson’s actions described in the documents surrounding the crisis found in the Foreign Relations of the United States book. It is concluded that much of Johnson’s personality can be observed in the response to the crisis. Hence, Barber’s postulations, that a President’s personality conforms its presidential behavior, are confirmed and thus this thesis encourages scholars to revisit Barber’s work to predict leader’s behavior in this uncertain climate that NATO is undergoing.
