dc.description.abstract | Above all, Roman civic religion served as a bond of social cohesion that largely fulfilled the needs of the rulers. However, in times of crisis, the Romans turned their attention to religious offerings of an initiatory or mystery nature, which were very different from the official Roman religion. Many of the imperial decrees that seem to prohibit superstitious practices refer to what we would today (in an era marked by the proliferation of sects and the resurgence of interest in the occult) call "private devotions," that is, practices born outside of the ancient official religious institutions, which had become increasingly hollow. This article aims to study the legislative architecture of the Roman imperial machinery in its efforts to suppress such practices. | en-GB |
