‘Make Europe Great Again’: far right Hungary takes over presidency of the Council of the European Union

Aunque su posición ha sido fortalecida por el auge de la extrema derecha en Europa, su influencia será limitada por la agenda política de la UE. Orbán mantiene lazos con Putin y Xi, y su gobierno priorizará temas como la inmigración y la expansión en los Balcanes, mientras evita cuestiones como el cambio climático. La corrupción y los fondos europeos congelados son desafíos clave.

On July 1, Hungary will assume the rotating presidency of the EU Council, raising concerns in the European Parliament due to Viktor Orbán’s government violating the rule of law. While the far-right surge has strengthened his position, the EU's political agenda will limit Hungary’s influence. Orbán maintains ties with Putin and Xi, prioritizing immigration and Balkan expansion while avoiding climate policies. Corruption and frozen EU funds remain major challenges. Despite tensions with the bloc, Hungary will not exit the EU, as its economy heavily depends on European funding. Internal opposition from Péter Magyar also threatens Orbán’s rule.
