II Estudio de los centros de acogimiento residencial en el ámbito de la protección a la infancia en España

The purpose of the Study is to update knowledge on the situation of residential care centers for children and adolescents within the child protection system and its regulations across our country, addressing national and international demands for standardized and up-to-date information in this sector. It is based on the common basic typology agreed upon with the Autonomous Communities (CC.AA.) in 2021 during the First Study of Centers carried out by the Asociación Nuevo Futuro in collaboration with the Chair of Children’s Rights at the Comillas Pontifical University.

This current Study has examined the structure, care programs, and regulations of child protection centers in Spain. A standardized classification of all protection centers has been carried out, with disaggregated and analyzed data for each of the 17 Autonomous Communities and the Autonomous Cities, providing a holistic and comprehensive view of child and adolescent protection centers. It also provides public administrations and organizations with an appropriate channel for sharing this information.

The results make it possible to assess the transformation of the protection system towards deinstitutionalization, its ongoing improvement, and the level of compliance with newly implemented strategies—key elements for decision-making regarding the child protection system in Spain. The Study delves into a more homogeneous and protective model of residential care, developed through consensus and commitment with all the Autonomous Communities. This model focuses on small-sized, community-integrated centers, as established by both international and national standards.
