Abstract
The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between emotional intelligence (EI), the type of
adult attachment (secure, remote, worried and fearful-hostile) and psychiatric symptoms, as well as
study the relationship between EI and sociodemographic variables sex and age, in a sample of 200
Spanish general population participans (57% women y 44% mens) where the average age was 35.98
years old. To do this, the following instruments were used: the Adult Attachment Questionnaire
(CCA), the TMMS-24 was used to measure perceived emotional intelligence (IEP) and the SA-45,
short form of the SCL-90. Data were analyzed using SPSS 20 statistical program. The results showed
firstly that subjects with a type of attachment concerned, were those who scored better in IE, following
by those with secure attachment. Secondly, subjects with secure attachment were those who showed
higher levels of psychological well-being or absence of symptoms. Third, symptom scores were
statistically significantly different between those who had an adequate or excellent IE and IE deficient
in certain subscales. Fourth, significant differences between the type of adult attachment, EI and
symptomatology were found, being subjects with fearful-hostile attachment, and of these, those who
scored lower in IE scores, which showed higher scores of symptoms clinically significant depression,
anxiety and interpersonal sensitivity. Fifthly, women scored better than men only in the subscale of
emotional clarity TMMS-24. Whe it comes to sex, no relationship was found. Therefore , the present
study has drawn the conclusion that the type of adult attachment and EI are great predictors of mental
health.
