Analysis of the influence of voltage control on flicker
Abstract
The increase in flicker levels due to the rise in the decentralization of generation units
and loads at MV grid levels, such as arc furnaces, is a threat for the power quality of the
system in the near future. Nowadays, different units such as STATCOMS are positioned
strategically at sensitive nodes in the grid contributing to its mitigation.
The aim of this thesis is to investigate the applicability and effectiveness that inverter
interfaced distributed generation (IIDG) with Q(U) control could have in the mitigation of
flicker levels in addition to their objective to maintain voltage stability. These IIDG units
will be referred to as Virtual STATCOMs. To perform this study, the impact of the time
constant and Q(U) characteristic slope of an inverter on flicker mitigation is analyzed.
As a basis, a simple configuration of a MV grid is modelled. Flicker is generated as stipulated
by the IEC 6100-4-15 tests at different amplitudes and frequencies by introducing
a load with fluctuations in its active and reactive power demand. Especially high frequencies
and amplitudes show to limit the optimal parameterization and extent to which inverters
can mitigate flicker. Further, the main sources of flicker in real life are modelled
for a deeper understanding of the origin of flicker and its features. This includes an arc
furnace, a welding machine and a motor start/stop.
The characteristics of the grid at the Point of Common Coupling (PCC) of the inverter
are found to also have a large effect on its effectivity. As a result, short-circuit power
(𝑆𝑠𝑐) and grid impedance angle at PCC (𝜑𝑃𝐶𝐶) are varied in different scenarios, finding
that high values of 𝑆𝑠𝑐 and 𝜑𝑃𝐶𝐶 far from 90° result in highest flicker mitigation.
Finally, the cooperative and interference behavior of two inverters in different grid and
flicker characteristics scenarios is studied and compared to the installation of one unique
inverter with the same total apparent power capacity. This shows a promising future in
flicker mitigation with the rise in decentralization of the MV grid.
This study is performed using RMS values. For this purpose, the precision and time resources
of different methods for RMS voltage generation are compared. Moreover, the
flickermeter as described in IEC 6100-4-15, is adapted to have RMS voltage values instead
of a sinusoidal wave as an input. Its limitations at measuring high frequency flicker
levels, as a result of the different methods of generating RMS voltage, are also covered
in this study.

Analysis of the influence of voltage control on flickerTitulación / Programa
Investigation of the impact of existing reactive power control (e.g. Q(U)-control) on the flicker level in MV grids. The dynamic impact of different parameters (short circuit power, impedance, device power, time and gain parameters) of reactive power control on flicker levels is analyzed in pre-studies for a single device. A parameter study is accomplished to identify to which extend the parameters may be varied to achieve best flicker mitigation while maintaining a stable system. Flicker levels are simulated with modulated loads with frequencies and size with respect to the IEC 61000-4-15 test cases. A flicker evaluation tool is to be extended to allow the analysis of RMS-Flicker values. Furthermore, it is to investigate to what extend multiple distributed devices can improve the flicker level together. The results need to be verified in more complex topologies in an exemplary medium voltage grid (European MV CIGRE Benchmark Grid).Materias/ categorías / ODS
