Abstract
The aim of this study was to analyze the psychological impact in siblings of children with cancer, also considering family’s psychosocial risk. For this purpose, a total sample of 22 siblings (ages between 6 and 18 years old) were approached through patient´s associations. The following questionnaires were used: BASC for behavioral and/or emotional maladjustment assessment and PAT 2.0. for family’s psychosocial risk. Another sociodemographic and clinic variables were collected. Data were analyzed via SPSS 24 statistics software. The results showed firstly that sibling’s maladjustment was greater in the highest level of family’s psychosocial risk. Secondly, the sibling’s total maladjustment was not statistically significant, but the percentage of siblings obtaining “at risk” scores were higher than those predicted by the scales on general population. Third, the maladjustment increased on siblings whose age difference with the diagnosed child was smaller, as well as siblings of the same gender as the diagnosed and on those who did not have other siblings. Finally, no statistically significant differences were found in respect of time after diagnosis. The results of the present study allow to affirm the need of developing specific questionnaires to detect risk factors in siblings of children with cancer as well as the need to design preventive interventions for the initial stages after diagnosis.
