Teología del martirio. Una aproximación

Abstract

El martirio en la teología cristiana remite, en primer lugar, a la persona de Cristo; ya sea en sentido activo como quien da testimonio, siendo el testigo fiel y veraz; o en sentido pasivo como aquel sobre el que se da testimonio, aun a riesgo de la vida. El culto que los cristianos a partir del siglo II-III darán a los mártires, como modelos más significativos de la santidad, muestra el carácter esencialmente eclesial del martirio como una forma de expresar el ser de la Iglesia como communio sanctorum. Este testimonio de vida y confesión de fe lejos de ser un modelo del pasado, continúa siendo el patrón de la vocación a la santidad para todos los cristianos. Para ello la teología cristiana ha necesitado repensar el concepto de martirio, devolviéndolo a su sentido original de testimonio vinculado a la existencia cotidiana del cristiano en el mundo. El martirio, finalmente, es un testimonio de Dios. Como dice bellamente el prefacio de la eucaristía en la fiesta de los mártires, en cada martirio se nos revela la debilidad del Dios omnipotente: «en su martirio, Señor, has sacado fuerza de lo débil, haciendo de la debilidad tu propio testimonio».

Martyrdom in Christian theology refers, in the first place, to the person of Christ; either in the active sense as the one who gives testimony, being the faithful and true witness; or in passive sense like that on which testimony is given, even at the risk of life. The cult that Christians from the second to the third century will give to martyrs, as the most significant models of holiness, shows the essentially ecclesial character of martyrdom as a way of expressing the being of the Church as communio sanctorum. This testimony of life and confession of faith, far from being a model of the past, continues to be the pattern of the vocation to holiness for all Christians. For this the Christian theology has needed to rethink the concept of martyrdom, returning it to its original sense of testimony linked to the daily existence of the Christian in the world. Martyrdom, finally, is a testimony of God. As the preface of the Eucharist in the celebration of the martyrs beautifully says, in each martyrdom the weakness of the omnipotent God is revealed to us: «in your martyrdom, Lord, you have drawn strength from the weak, making weakness your own testimony».
