Abstract
Traditionally, leadership has been associated to masculine traits such as authority and
control. This has led to the creation of a masculine leader stereotype and to the exclusion
of women from high corporate positions around the world. Nevertheless, in the
challenging economic environment created by globalisation and digitalisation of the 21st
century, where approximately half of the graduates are women in developed countries, a
more feminine leadership is being appraised. A leadership based on empathy,
participative decision making and teamwork is gaining relevance in the business world.
Furthermore, several studies in developed countries have shown that increasing the
presence of women in leadership bodies of the company has a positive impact in its
financial results and in its stock performance. In this thesis, we analyse the main
characteristics of feminine leadership and how a higher percentage of women in the Board
of Directors from Spanish Ibex 35 index companies, between 2013 and 2018, is linked to
lower volatility of the stock.
