Darwin, Zimbabwe
Abstract
Water is an essential element for the maintenance of life. Although it is so necessary, its access around the world in not the same. The project consists of designing a dam to replace another one built by the community which, due to construction errors, has not been put into operation. When the dam is completed, it will be able to hold enough water to supply at least 2000 people.
Given the scarce information available of the area, an exhaustive study of the site selected for the construction of the dam was executed. All of the information used was correctly based on justified estimates. This study was done in order to select the type of dam that best suits the needs of the local population.
The dam proposed in this document is a solution between a surface dam and an underground dam. This characteristic ensures that when the dam has no water on the surface, community members can dig a small well and extract the water stored in the sand.
Several designs were considered until the one that met all safety requirements was found. It will be very complicated to follow European building regulations in Zimbabwe, so was essential to ensure high safety factors.
Improving the community's access to water will not only have an impact on the locals’ living conditions but it will also be a driving force of the economy. Community members will be able to focus on other activities for the achievement of personal goals, as gathering water will no longer be an essential condition for survival.
