En víspera del año nuevo de 1999 Vladimir Putin fue nombrado presidente interino de Rusia tras la dimisión de Boris Yeltsin. Pocos habrían pensado que este exagente de la KGB, por aquel entonces poco conocido, lograría mantenerse en el poder como presidente y primer ministro durante dos décadas con una popularidad casi intacta incluso en contextos económicos maltrechos.
