Abstract
Since its independence in 1923, Turkey has pursued a foreign policy mainly linked to Western countries (the US and European countries) but always maintaining some contact with other neighbouring countries such as some Middle Eastern nations. However, after the rise to power of the AKP (Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi) political party, currently led by Erdoğan, this contact between Turkey and other regions has intensified and Turkey has changed the course of its international relations. These changes have been mainly due to factors such as Erdoğan's increased authority and the growing Islamisation of the country's institutions. Despite this, both the US and the EU have geopolitical and economic interests in the region, which is why they continue to seek understandings and agreements with Turkey, which, in turn, is interested in the socio-political benefits it can obtain from these relations. Due of the interest of these nations, Turkey is in a privileged position to pursue its domestic objectives through its international relations, as it has the power to determine what kind of foreign policies and strategies to establish at any given moment.
