Abstract
Escala de Soledad Revisada (UCLA), The Preference for Solitude Scale (PSS) y Motivation
for Solitude Scale – Short Form (MSS-SF).
Además, a
Introduction. Throughout history, the study of time alone has focused on the negative effects
that this entails, overlooking the benefits and different experiences that this time alone can
bring. This study seeks to understand what leads people to experience a state of voluntary
isolation in a positive or negative way, hypothesizing that motivation (both self-determined
and non-self-determined) plays an important role in determining whether the preference for
this state does or does not entail feelings of loneliness in the population. Likewise, it seeks to
study the sociodemographic profile of the different variables of the study. Method. The study
has a cross-sectional design, and the following questionnaires were used to measure the
variables: Escala de Soledad Revisada (UCLA), The Preference for Solitude Scale (PSS) and
Motivation for Solitude Scale - Short Form (MSS-SF). Results. The results indicate that the
mediation between preference for solitude and loneliness by self-determined motivation was
not statistically significant, unlike the mediation of non-self-determined motivation, which
was statistically significant. Similarly, it was observed that people who are not in a romantic
relationship, younger and with lower economic income, show higher levels of loneliness. In
addition, at a younger age, self-determined motivation is greater. Discussion. Therefore, the
idea is supported that the preference for solitude (this state of voluntary isolation) when due
to non-self-determined reasons is accompanied by higher levels of loneliness, highlighting
the importance of continuing to investigate other possible factors involved in the appearance
and disappearance of feelings of loneliness.
