The Extraordinary Synod of Bishops for 1985 revealed the complexity of the interpretation of Vatican II. Its Final Report presents this basic principle: the four constitutions of the Council are the hermeneutical key to the decrees and the declarations. This article raises a quaestio disputata that affects the interpretation of the conciliar teaching: Is it possible to establish a theological priority among these four documents? To give an answer to this question the author proposes a key to reading the theology of the Vatican II: the Trinitarian and Christological structure of the history of salvation constitutes the background and the sources for the conciliar ecclesiology.
