Teresa of Jesus is one of the few women that founded religious institutes prior to the contemporary era and her name is on the frontline in the even more limited list of women founders of male institutes. We wish to emphasize this dimension of exceptionality, put it into its context and relate it to its precedents in order to evaluate her originality in key of female authorship, as well as other possible characteristic aspects ruled by other various reasons, including sexual difference and gender politics.
