Abstract
This project is being developed in an industrial facility that currently has its own oxygen demand, so one of the main objectives is to cover the consumption of this gas. To achieve this, it has been decided to incorporate an electrolyzer that will produce hydrogen and oxygen. Another objective of this project is to increase the energy independence of the plant by valorizing the hydrogen produced by the electrolyzer. In this way, a better use of the available resources and a lower environmental impact of its activity is achieved. To valorize the hydrogen, different alternatives are being considered, including the use of a hydrogen fuel cell to produce electricity, the use of a boiler that uses hydrogen as fuel, and the injection of hydrogen into the natural gas network.
Making the hydrogen and oxygen produced green is one of the main challenges of the project, and various measures will be studied to make this possible. The plant will have a photovoltaic installation that has been developed in a separate project, whose operating data are known and will be used for the analysis of the new facility. This, together with the improved energy efficiency strategies, aligns the project with the goals of the SDGs.
While energy independence and the use of renewable energy are on the roadmap for a large number of industry projects, they have to be accompanied by good environmental performance. It would be counterproductive if the environmental performance of the plant were to worsen despite improving its energy performance. In order to verify that the incorporation of this new equipment, together with the photovoltaic installation, represents a real improvement in the energy and environmental performance of the plant, a study of its overall environmental impact will be carried out. Therefore, another objective of the project is to ensure that the environmental impact of the new plant is less than when it did not operate with this equipment.
