“La devoción a San Luis Bertrán. Biografías y hagiografías”

Abstract

El camino a la santidad reconocida, que se fue definiendo tras la celebración de la tercera etapa del Concilio de Trento, establecía como una condición imprescindible la existencia de una devoción creciente al candidato por parte de los fieles a lo largo del proceso de ascenso a los altares. Habitualmente, la promoción de dicha devoción se potenció por las distintas instancias implicadas (la ciudad de origen, la orden religiosa, el obispado, etc.) a través de diversos instrumentos, entre los que tradicionalmente se encuentran escritos de diversa consideración, comedias, estampas, cuadros, etc. Entre estos destacaban las vidas o hagiografías que trataban de dar a conocer al conjunto de los devotos el periplo vital del candidato destacando los pasajes más significativos y convenientes. La imagen de fray Luis Beltrán no sufrió grandes modificaciones, aunque desde que adquirió la condición de beato, sus biógrafos se desinteresaron por su “vida”, que tan fielmente procuró reflejar fray Vicente Iustiniano Antist, y escribieron hagiografías que pusieran en primer plano aquellos aspectos que permitiesen culminar un proceso de canonización. La obra de Juan Bautista Roca, que puso el acento en los prodigios y milagros, acaecidos muchos de ellos en la provincia dominica de Nueva Granada, determinó de forma definitiva la vinculación del santo con los territorios americanos.

The work of Juan Bautista Roca, who emphasized wonders and miracles, many of which occurred in the Dominican province of Nueva Granada, definitively determined the connection of the saint with the American territories.
