Traducción del humor subtitulado vs doblado: el personaje Michael Scott en la serie The Office

Abstract

En la actualidad hacer llegar el mensaje al mayor número de personas posible se ha vuelto crucial, este trabajo de fin de grado se centrará en cómo realizar esa tarea, en el ámbito de la comedia, a través de la traducción audiovisual. Este tema resulta interesante de investigar debido a la complejidad de este trabajo, ya que cada idioma contiene aspectos distintos, por ejemplo, no es lo mismo el humor inglés y sus referentes culturales que el humor español y sus referentes, por lo que el papel del traductor audiovisual es clave para conseguir que el efecto humorístico, en este caso, llegue al público con el mismo efecto o similar tanto en el idioma original como en el idioma meta. En este trabajo, por lo tanto, se realizará una investigación sobre los distintos métodos, teorías y técnicas utilizadas para traducir el humor en series o películas, tanto en subtitulación como en doblaje; y, después de ese trabajo de investigación, para poder comprender la complejidad y las técnicas necesarias para llevar a cabo esta tarea de traducción, se analizarán como ejemplo algunas escenas cómicas del personaje Michael Scott de la serie “The Office”, interpretado por Steve Carell, y se estudiarán las estrategias seguidas para traducir su humor de inglés a español, tanto para doblaje como para subtitulación, haciendo así una comparación de las dificultades para cada tipo de traducción audiovisual.

Nowadays, delivering the message as widely as possible has become crucial, and this thesis will focus on how to accomplish this task, in the field of comedy, through audiovisual translation. This topic is interesting to investigate due to the complexity of this work, since each language contains different cultural aspects, for example, English humor and its cultural references are not the same as Spanish humor and its references, so the role of the audiovisual translator is key to ensure that the humorous effect, in this case, reaches the audience with the same or similar effect, both in the original language and in the target language. In this paper, therefore, a research will be carried out on the different methods, theories and techniques used to translate humor in series or movies, both in subtitling and dubbing; and, after this research work, in order to understand the complexity and the techniques necessary to carry out this translation task, we will analyze as an example some comic scenes of the character Michael Scott from the series "The Office", played by Steve Carell, and we will study the strategies followed to translate his humor from English to Spanish, both for dubbing and subtitling, thus making a comparison of the difficulties for each type of audiovisual translation.
