Espíritus, demonios y posesiones en los evangelios

Abstract

Entre los testimonios evangélicos más difíciles de comprender para los hombres y mujeres de las sociedades científicas y tecnológicas occidentales están aquellos que se refieren a la creencia en diferentes tipos de espíritus y demonios que intervienen en las vidas de las personas beneficiándolas o dañándolas. Más aún, no es infrecuente encontrar que estas experiencias se cataloguen de irracionales, pseudociencia, superstición, magia o engaño. No sucede así entre personas y grupos de otras culturas tradicionales actuales. En ellas se admite la presencia e injerencia de espíritus en la vida cotidiana, y no se duda tampoco de la existencia de posesiones positivas o negativas. Estas culturas cuentan, además, prácticas y rituales para ganar el favor de los espíritus y para defenderse de los daños, sufrimientos y desventuras que pudieran causarles.

Among the most difficult evangelical testimonies for men and women in scientific and technological Western societies are those that refer to the belief in different types of spirits and demons that intervene in people's lives, either benefiting or harming them. Furthermore, it is not uncommon to find that these experiences are categorized as irrational, pseudoscience, superstition, magic, or deception. However, this is not the case among individuals and groups from other present-day traditional cultures. In these cultures, the presence and interference of spirits in everyday life are acknowledged, and there is no doubt about the existence of positive or negative possessions. Additionally, these cultures have practices and rituals to gain the favor of spirits and to protect themselves from the damages, sufferings, and misfortunes that spirits could cause them.
